Santo Domingo nightlife - dance, drink, have fun!
People-watching at the cafes and bars, many of them open air. Dancing merengue, salsa, bachata and even rock until the early morning in discos and night clubs. Casino gambling until dawn in hotel casinos. Santo Domingo has its fair share of casinos, international theatre, music and dance performances, the finest of them performing at the National Theater. A city for young people, every evening hundreds of young executives congregate for drinks at the many bars and cafes in the city, many located at the Avenida Abraham Lincoln, Gustavo Mejia Ricart and Roberto Pastoriza or on the Malecon. The nightlife starts late, with people arriving at the discos after 11 pm and the merengue, salsa and rock beats don't stop until around 4 am at upscale dance clubs in town. Newcomers to the city should visit the Guacara Taina, a famous multi-level dance club set in a massive underground cave in the Mirador del Sur Park. Or live orchestra music nights at Jet Set Disco at Av. Independencia in front of Presidente beer brewery. La Guacara Taina, Avenida Mirador del Sur, in Parque Mirador del Sur, is the best discoteca in the country, drawing equal numbers of locals and visitors. Set in an underground cave within a verdant park, the specialty is merengue, salsa, and other forms of Latin music. There are three bars, two dance floors, and banquettes and chairs nestled into the rocky walls. The cover is RD$250 (US$9.05; includes one drink). It's open Tuesday to Sunday from 9pm; closing time varies. Fantasy Disco, Avenida Heroes de Luperon 29, La Feria, is one of the capital's most popular discos, about a block inland from the Malecon. Once you get past the vigilant security staff, you'll find lots of intimate nooks and crannies, a small dance floor, and one of the country's best-chosen medleys of nonstop merengue music. Entrance is free, and beer costs US$2.75 to US$3.50 a bottle. The place is open daily from 6pm 'til 4am. Jet Set, Centro Comercial El Portal, Avenida Independencia, is one of the capital's most formal and elaborate nightclubs, admitting couples only, and nobody who is too rowdy. Most of the tables and chairs slope down toward an amphitheater-style dance floor, giving the place the feel of a bullfighting arena. The collection of live orchestras that play here are better than anywhere else in town. Entrance costs between US$10 and US$42, depending on the artist. The Jet Set takes off at 9pm and flies until the early morning.
