Santo Domingo scuba diving - a reason for your vacation
The Dominican Republic has primarily tropical climate, with more local variations in temperature than seasonal ones. Diving is done year around and there are two rainy seasons which are October - May along the northern coast and May - October in the south. June to September is hurricane season and even though it is not often that one blowing through - there is a chance. Visibility can be expected to be between 50 and 100 feet (15 - 30m) and the average water temperature is between 25-29°C (76-82°F). Recommended insulation is a thin lycra suit or a 3mm "shorty" wetsuit for snorkeling and diving. For rainy days and multiple diving a 3mm full wetsuit is necessary. House reef diving can be done with a guide or independently. Diving on the reefs are usually done by speedboats and from mooring buoys. Impressive mountain ranges veined with spectacular rivers and waterfalls, and saltwater lakes teeming with exotic wildlife are some of the scenic surroundings of the Dominican Republic. Here, in the heart of the Caribbean, you will discover more than 1,288 km (800 miles) of coastline, with the most beautiful beaches in all different styles. Under water it is even better! Jump on a dive boat to one of the many attractive dive sites - or enjoy the luxury of diving on a house reef. The dive sites are home to hundreds of tropical fish, coral and plant life. Amongst the fish frequently spotted are the grouper and porcupine fish are frequently spotted. Smaller life forms are abundant and makes for fantastic opportunities for the keen photographer. Magnificent and brightly-colored fan coral are a habitant of the iridescent reefs with illusive visitors like whale sharks, mantas, and the cheerful dolphins. Other mammals like the Manatees are found in the endless mangrove forests and lovesick humpback whales in the Bahia de Samana in the season. Thanks to an extensive underwater parks system and strict enforcement of restricted areas, visiting divers are greeted by a diverse abundance of fish life. Most marine park areas along the south coast offer shallow- to medium-depth dive sites with healthy coral reefs and lots of fish. The country also has an active artificial reef program and has sunk a number of large, steel-hulled vessels. Add to this program an equal number of wrecks sunk by natural causes and you have more than a dozen sunken ships that can be explored.
